Cookbook Design that Changed the Way We Eat

It’s said that we ‘eat with our eyes’, so how does the design of cookery books shape how and what we choose to cook? Featuring photographer Jonathan Lovekin, Nigel Slater’s photographer for the last 30 years, and Natalie Bellos, Bloomsbury Publishing editorial director who has worked on books by food writers and chefs from Tom Kerridge to Heston Blumenthal.

Our panel discussion is led by renowned designer Caz Hildebrand, who has designed numerous bestselling cookbooks including those by Nigella Lawson and Yotam Ottolenghi.

Caz Hildebrand is the award-winning designer of sumptuous best-selling cookbooks by Nigella Lawson, Yotam Ottolenghi and Sam and Sam Clark of Moro. In 2010 Caz created The Geometry of Pasta with leading chef Jacob Kenedy of London’s Bocca di Lupo. Her book Herbarium was published by Thames & Hudson in 2016, and other books include The Grammar of Spice, This Is Me, Full Stop (with Philip Cowell) and An Anarchy of Chillies (coming August 2018). Caz is one of the Creative Partners at Here Design.

The photographer Jonathan Lovekin has worked in the industry for over 30 years . His first commission in the art of food photography was for Nigel Slater, they are presently collaborating on their eleventh book together, whilst continuing to produce a weekly column for The Observer. Jonathan has photographed five books with Yotam Ottolenghi and has worked with a multitude of chefs and publications both at home and abroad. Alongside these still life projects, Jonathan’s Architectural and Landscape work has been published and exhibited internationally.

Natalie Bellos is the Editorial Director for Illustrated Non-fiction at Bloomsbury Publishing, a leading independent publishing house. She has worked on books by food writers and chefs including Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Tom Kerridge, Raymond Blanc, Heston Blumenthal, Fuchsia Dunlop, Yasmin Khan and Ella Risbridger.
